RADNEVO MUNICIPALITY

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Municipality of Radnevo is situated in the eastern part of the Upper Thracian Plain, covering an area of 545,2sq. m. It is one of the 11 municipalities within Stara Zagora District and itself comprises 22 communities.
The municipal land is flat, with an average altitude of 141,1 m above sea level. The region enjoys a mild climate with an average annual temperature around 12,1° C.
The rich black earth with large humus stratum and moderate rainfall is highly beneficial to agriculture. The primary natural resources of the municipality are the lignite coalfields, part of the Maritsa East basin, where 57 % of the Bulgarian coal resources are concentrated (2,6 billion tons, in a 30 m high layer). There are some deposits of gypsum and marble, as well as aggregate material in the rivers, suitable for industrial extraction.
There is a mineral water spring with a temperature of 31° Ñ in the village of Topolyane.
Ovcharitsa Dam lies on an area of 627 hectars and is a favourable place for recreation and fishing.
The municipality is an important transport point in the region. The Å 85 Russe – Kapitan Andreevo motorway, connecting Romania with Turkey and Greece, crosses the municipal territory. There are convenient road links with the district centre Stara Zagora (32 km), the capital Sofia (250 km) and the Back Sea ports of Bourgas (180 km) and Varna (310 km). The North to South railway, providing links to the whole country, also passes through Ranevo Municipality.
All communities within the municipality are supplied with water and electricity, phone lines, and up-to-date telecommunications facilities.

ECONOMIC PROFILE

Radnevo Municipality is an important centre of the national lignite coal mining and power generating industries. It holds one of the highest ranks of GDP per capita in the country.
There are 550 active companies in the municipality.
Coal mining and electrical power generating are the leading sectors in the municipal economy. The town of Radnevo hosts the headquarters of the Mines Maritsa East company (www.marica-iztok.com ). Low-calorie lignite coal is extracted in open mines covering an area of 103 sq. km. The operation is administered by three mines with a total annual yield of 21 – 30 million tons. The extracted coal is used primarily by the power generating plants of Maritsa East industrial complex. The largest thermal power generating plant in Bulgaria – TPP “Maritsa East – 2” (www.tpp2.com ), with a capacity of 1450 MW, is located within Radnevo Municipality .
Agriculture is the second major sector in the municipality. The agricultural land totals 373 sq. km. Vegetables are widely cultivated here and provide raw material for the food processing industry. This was the reason for the foreign investment attracted in “Trakiyski Plod” vegetable processing factory. The natural conditions are beneficial to cereal crops: wheat and barley, corn, also sunflower, cotton, and perennial plants: almonds, vineyards, cherries and plums. There are possibilities for the industrial growing of rice. Although cattle’s breeding is not very well developed, it is enough to meet the needs of the municipality. Two meat processing plants operate here: Iveko and Nanyuk Internetional.
Ten of the largest Bulgarian banks offer their services in Radnevo through their own branches. A Centre for Development of Radnevo Municipality was established in 2001 to provide support to SMEs and potential investors (.
Outside investment was attracted in power generating, gas supply, water supply, mining and processing industries, and trade. There is a potential for attracting foreign investment in agriculture and fish breeding. A number of companies from Germany, USA, Italy, France and Turkey have manifested their interest in the municipal industry.
There are plenty of raw materials available for the establishment of new enterprises for cotton processing, vegetable oil and mayonnaise production, animal feeds production, fruits and vegetables processing.

HISTORY AND CULTURE

The mild climate, rich soils and hot water made the region around Radnevo attractive place for people to settle here in the ancient times. The first people who came to live here were the Thracian tribe Pirogeri. They built their settlements 4,000 years ago. Later, the Romans set a road station called Arzus.
More than 300 unique archeological sites were uncovered on the territory of Radnevo municipality: strongholds and fortifications, ancient settlements, tells and mounds. All archeological finds, including a number of object made of gold, silver, bronze, stone and bone are exhibited in the town archeological museum.
A village called Radne Mahle was established around 1700 by a group of Bulgarians. It grew larger after the railway connecting Simeonovgrad and Nova Zagora was constructed by the French company of Baron Hirsch in 1873, which gave an impetus to the development of the crafts and trade in the region. In 1906 the name of the municipality changed into Radnevo.
Radnevo is the birthplace of famous Bulgarians like the poet Geo Milev, the artist Georgi Karadjov, a number of writers, singers, and public figures. Every year an international folk music festival, a plein-air meeting of artists called “Light, land, people”, May Cultural Days, and Geo Milev’s Days take place. The Gergyovden Dance Company is well known in a number of countries.
The town has also a Municipal Library, a Picture Gallery with over 540 exhibits, and a Municipal House of Culture. There are 14 culture centres in the villages within the municipality. The largest one, “Geo Milev” in Radnevo, supports a group for old songs “Serenade”, a folk dance company and a drama theatre group.

POPULATION AND LIFESTYLE

The population of Radnevo municipality is 24 100. Coal mining, power engineering and transmission industries employ the greater part of the workforce. Unemployment rate here is among the lowest in Stara Zagora Region.
Radnevo has skilled workforce. Qualified workers and specialists are trained in the three secondary schools and the technical college for mechanization and automation of the open mines.
There is a well-equipped town hospital, a medical centre and a state psychiatric clinic. There are medical services in the villages.looking with confidence in the future.
